Preface…

Lovely followers,

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. I’ve just gotten back from Ireland, where I ate, drank and was very merry. And for the first time in 18 months, I didn’t switch on my laptop in three whole days. Not-writing feels weird, but no doubt once my editor’s had the chance to read through the first draft, I’ll be once more stuck to my keys!

Anyway, onto the promise I made last month, of sharing the preface of Science and the City. I’m afraid that I’m only allowed to share an abridged / heavily-edited version of it. Hopefully this will still whet your appetite 🙂

…..We are officially no longer farmers, we are urbanites. Cities have never been bigger, busier or more important. Luckily, for the past (almost) eleven years, I’ve lived in what I think is the greatest city in the world – London. And it has inspired me to figure out how cities work, and to help others to do the same.

As it turns out, all I needed to do was to spend too much time on Twitter, attract the attention of a publisher and then convince them to let me write a book…. Easy! So here it is, Science and the City (now and forever to be known as SATC) – my very first book. It’s basically my scientific love-letter to the great cities of the world.

In SATC, I will take you on a big, sciencey exploration of your city. Through a series of a jam-packed chapters, we’ll peek behind doors and under the footpaths in cities across the globe, to discover the secrets there in. We’ll talk about all of the things that make your city a city, from its transport network, to the systems that get water and electricity to you (separately!).

With me as your direct line to hundreds of experts, you’ll find answers to your questions about the urban jungle. I’ll explain how the technology that is already all around us works, and help you to build your own vision of the cities of tomorrow. Together, we’ll trawl through the latest research papers to find the coolest technologies you’ve never heard of, but that are set to change the way we build, travel and work in the future….

So there you have it…. Some of the text that you’ll hopefully see in print in August! Plenty more previews to come, and I’ve lots planned for the official SATC Twitter account too: @ScienceAndCity, so keep an eye out! The next few months will be busy for me – I have two (not-book-related but) very exciting projects lined up – but my followers will remain my top priority 🙂

How’s 2016 shaping up for you? Let me know in the comments below.

PS: If this just isn’t enough for you, you’ll find more details on the book’s contents in this post
